No matter how much we dislike or enjoy our career, day-to-day activities can begin to feel like we are running on this never ending wheel. Wake up, sit in traffic, perform regular tasks, get back in bumper-to-bumper traffic and try to get to bed at a decent hour. If the daily routine never really deviates from our ‘regularly scheduled programing’, how in the world can we see life for anything more than a series of banal experiences?
Mundane living is not for the ambitious! Having graduated a little more than five weeks ago, and getting a temporary job that I’m not really thrilled about, I certainly know what it feels like to be unfulfilled. However, if it’s one thing I’ve learned in my week of working it’s that every day is a gift, and the only way to give thanks for the gift is to enjoy it. Whether you’re sitting at a cubicle, running from patient to patient or bussing tables, the best way to enjoy life’s journey is to delight in the details. Sometimes we get so caught up in getting things done that we forget to smile. When you get up for work in the mornings, take a few seconds to look in the mirror and smile at yourself. Put a mirror on your desk or in your pocket, and every time you notice that mirror, let that be a reminder to smile at the next person you see. When making a habit of practicing jubilation you will find yourself becoming more positive; laughing at silly mistakes instead of becoming frustrated, or even finding contentment in completing the tasks you usually hate doing.
Our second, yet equally important goal to win the rat race is to conquer situational contentment. Oftentimes, when we are not where we want to be career wise, we settle for subpar just because we feel like our actions in the meantime don’t count. I am so sorry to inform you that what I call complacent commotion will never point you toward the direction success. When we have made in our mind that we will take life seriously as soon as we get to where we want to be, we have already plotted the points for failure. The only way to combat complacent commotion is to perform at your highest level, regardless of whether you deem it worthy of your complete effort or not. Starting today, let’s all make it a priority to put 100% in everything we and to find joy a little bit of joy in every atictivity!
